Thought for the Week - 9th August

Pastor Gareth Watkins

Job 3: 25-26

‘’For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me,
And what I dreaded has happened to me.
I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;
I have no rest, for trouble comes.” (NKJV)

There are many people in and around us, particularly at this time, who are experiencing fears, distress and unsettledness coming into their lives. They have no rest and are not at ease as troubles come. Jesus is the answer to these things, just as God was the answer for all that affected Job. Job went through distress after distress after distress, but by the end of his days, God gave him more blessing than he was ever born with or could obtain.

Jesus is the answer to your situation, your difficulties and distress. There is no problem known to man that God has not encountered before. He knows every fear and dread that can come upon us and all their possible causes. There is nothing that is new to God.

Do you think you are not important enough for God to breakthrough your troubles? Or perhaps you think you are too well steeped in the church that you no longer need Him in this way?

Satan has come to attack the things of God that are found in you. Whatever good things God has brought into your life Satan hates; he is the adversary and accuser of God who seeks to obstruct and hinder all that is good. Do you know this adversary? Jesus did, as did Job, Peter, and many others and so will we if we are walking closely with God. We too will know the assault of Satan and the fear, dread, and unrest he will try to put upon us.

‘’So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” (Job 1:7)

Has Satan stopped going to and fro the earth? Has he stopped accusing, opposing, and causing chaos? You only have to look at the world around you to see he has not.

Fear doesn’t come from God, He does not give us a spirit of fear (2Timothy 1:7), nor does He put dread and unrest upon us, and it is only through Him that we can break free from these things. We need God to breakthrough these things for us, but we also have a part to play ourselves. In James 4:7 we are instructed on what we need to do… ‘’Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’’

Submit to God and resist the devil are the things we must do to be free from what the adversary would put upon us, to be free from fear, dread, and distress. We must submit all to God and not hold on to control, desires and unforgiveness. We must also resist the devil withstanding his actions and not giving in to rebellion.

There cannot be any peace without being in a right relationship with God, and Satan cannot prevail when we are walking closely with Christ and are justified by faith.

Amen.
