Thought for the Week - 10th January

Pastor Gareth Watkins

1 Corinthians 5: 7-8 (NLT)

“Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth”

As a church we saw much blessing and God move in many ways among us in 2020. We are now at the beginning of 2021 and the blessings of yesterday belong to yesterday; this is a new day. As Christians we need new forgiveness, new righteousness and to go on with God with hunger in our hearts continuing to follow Christ. We are in lockdown and still under restrictions, but spiritually we are not bound, and the work of God continues.

If you want to be an overcomer in 2021, listen to Paul’s instruction to the Corinthians… ‘’Get rid of the old yeast”. This is also the old yeast within us, our old self in those parts of us that are yet to die unto Christ, parts that cling on to old sinful ways and remain unsanctified. If you want to be right with God, walk in His blessing, see healings, miracles and His works in your home, then this day you must get rid of the old yeast within you. Don’t allow the old parts to cling on, pulling you down and torturing your mind, ‘’become fresh dough’’, made pure, holy and part of the body and life of God.

Paul knew how life can crowd in on us, how sin of old can reappear and how pressures around us can overwhelm, so he says… ‘’Get rid’’. Do you know what it is that you need to get rid of to walk right with God? These things will be different for each of us, but all sins cause offense to God and will cause us to die unless we are ruthless with them. Paul doesn’t say, yes there is a little bit there but it is ok just try as best you can, he says ‘’Cut it out and Get rid’’.

The blood of Christ was shed for you and me so that we can walk in newness of life as part of the family of God, not so that we would hold on to old ways that would drag us down. We do not need to lose ground and go backwards, satan has been defeated and Christ is the victory.

‘’And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.’’ (Revelation 12:11)

Don’t give the enemy way by holding on to old sins. It might be old ways of thinking, old habits, or that you love your life too much with your wants and your desires rather than God’s. Let’s walk together in Christ, let us cling onto Him in these times and not be brought down by the fears and tribulations of the world. Let’s get rid of the things of old and be victorious in 2021.

Amen.
