Thought for the Week - 13th September

Pastor Gareth Watkins

Psalm 18: 28-36 (NLT)

‘’You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness. In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great. You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.’’

Psalm 66: 18-19

‘’If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.’’

Psalm 34: 18

‘’The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.’’

Stop Worry Start Living

As a church we see many difficulties come into peoples lives, they are all around us. God provides a way for us to live without worry, and to know in the middle of the storms, as the waves crash against us, that Jesus is enough. He never said that we would be without troubles, but He did say that He would never leave us or forsake us.

Are you in a place from which you need rescuing? Is your spirit crushed under the weight of life’s battles? There is a way through these things in God’s hands and we have a choice to either try to face them on our own and in our own strength, or with God in His strength.

‘’If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened’’… To be brought through our difficulties in God’s strength we must keep our hearts pure and right within in the midst of our trials, confessing and repenting of our sin, and turn to God to look for His way through. It is in this that God promises to be close to us and rescue us when we are crushed.

If we our facing our battles in God’s strength, what is the point of worrying and being anxious? We are encouraged to live, and when we are worrying it stops us living and draws us away from God and into sin. God promises to be with us and rescue us. Would you rather face your battles alone or with God who promises to be with you?

’You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.’’… The problems that come into our lives can bring with them darkness, but God doesn’t want us to be under darkness and when we are facing these things in Him, we are brought out from that darkness and into His light.

‘’In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall……He trains my hands for battle’’… Do you feel weak and not able to cope under your heavy load any longer? In God’s strength, like Sampson, you and I can crush an army. We are going to have problems in our lives, but when we turn to God He trains us to get through them. He teaches us to stand steadfast in the midst of it all and to trust in Him to free us from all that would hold us captive, so that we would have abundant life.

‘’Gods ways are perfect’’… We must not doubt God’s word, but keep ourselves right with Him, repent of our sin and ask Him to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. To live well and stop worrying, these are the steps we need to take week by week to see God bring us out from our darkness.

Amen.
