Thought for the Week - 9th November

Pastor Diana Rutherford

Matthew 8:24

Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

I am writing this on Monday morning at 6:30am. Outside it sounds wild; the wind is very strong and it’s been raining heavily during the night.

It made me think it must have been very unpleasant to be on the boat with the disciples, to say the least. It was a fierce storm, with waves breaking into the boat, tossing it like a small toy on the wild sea. It seemed as if Jesus didn’t care or that He wasn’t aware of the storm. He must have been exhausted to sleep through it!

It’s a tremendous story to illustrate the fierce storms we experience sometimes; storms that rage within us or around us. There are times when it feels as though Jesus is asleep and unaware of our plight. It’s a comfort to know that the disciples experienced such moments. What did they do? We read:

‘The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”’

Verse 25

We should learn to do exactly that. Run to Him, and yes, if you need to shout, then do that! He will answer you in your distress. He always hears the cries of His frightened child. His answer to His own friends was:

‘“Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!”

Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.’

Verse 26

And that’s exactly what happens for us when we cry to Him. Suddenly there will be a great calm.

Are you afraid of circumstances around you ‘breaking into your boat’ or afraid because of circumstances within (the waves are already in the boat)? For both the answer is the same; suddenly there will be a great calm. Yes, even when the situation is of your own making; when you have caused the storm by your own wrongdoing; cry to Him, He will answer speedily.
