Thought for the Week - 2nd November

Pastor Diana Rutherford

Nahum 1:7

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble;
and He knoweth them that trust in Him.

I was meditating on this verse on Sunday morning.

A stronghold is a refuge or fortress, a nice thought. As I thought on the word ‘stronghold’ I found myself thinking how God holds on to us strongly. Like a parent who wraps His arms around a small child and holds them securely; a husband who protects his beloved wife from harm, the Lord will hold us securely, protectively in the midst of trouble. In fact, there comes a peculiar hold that we only experience in the midst of trouble. He holds us so close He can feel every quiver of fear or anxiety, the racing of our heartbeat and is there to steady us with His strong arm.

Another meaning of stronghold is a place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld. There isn’t anywhere else we can go that is better to strengthen our faith than in the presence of the Lord. Church may help us, Christian books may encourage us but to find the very core or foundation of faith we find that in the presence of the Almighty God.

He indeed is our stronghold!
