Sometimes when I am trying to understand a verse in the bible I turn it round and think of the opposite. This verse would be something like this:

‘how worthless is our defective love.’

It so describes the human heart, doesn’t it? We find defects in our love again and again. If someone wrongs us we can’t forgive; when there’s a misunderstanding we go in a huff; we love things that are wrong; we even know that a mother’s love (which is meant to be one of the strongest purest loves known to man) can fail.

God’s love, on the other hand, is priceless, perfect, flawless, faultless, excellent. It never fails or finds situations too difficult to cope with. It is strong, consistent and always throbbing with warmth and power to help and support us. The bible describes it as priceless. In other words we cannot set a value on it. There is nothing like it in all the world.

When we compare God’s love to man’s love there is no comparison and yet we find it easier to lean on and accept the love of a failing individual rather than the pulsating love of a perfect God who will support us through life and death. If we could only begin to understand the depths of this love we would not hesitate to lean upon it. That doesn’t mean we don’t have human loves. God made us in His image, to love and be loved, but we learn to accept that far higher, holier, perfect love as being of ultimate importance in our lives.

It is a love that is pure and strong, and if we allow it, will lead us into all truth; into a nearness and relationship with God that will endure for a lifetime and then for all eternity!
