Thought for the Week - 25th July

1 Corinthians 1:25

This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.
It is wonderful to see people going on with God. Change in a person doesn’t stop at the point of salvation, it is the starting point from which we should be led by the Holy Spirit as He opens up to us His knowledge, and leads us towards a deepening relationship with, and reliance on, Christ.

We need to ensure that we are nourished spiritually, gaining ground, and through continual sanctification, becoming more Christ like. I am not for a moment suggesting that is easy, but we are not supposed to remain as babes feeding only on milk, but move forward in maturity able to digest solid food. There should come a settled confidence within us as we learn to tune in to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, and how we conduct ourselves should change in a way that is good, and right, and glorifying to God, emanating something of Christ’s righteousness to the world around us. We are of course a work in progress, and the road can be long and painful for some, but God wants only good for us, and He desires us to grow into the fullness of His blessing.

‘’For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God’’ (Romans 8:14)

This verse speaks of God’s desire for us to become sons of His. He wants us to grow into His people who carry His authority, just as a father might want to pass on an inheritance to His children in the natural, desiring that they carry forward his name or moral standing. How much more is it that God, our Holy and mighty Father, desires that we come up higher and stand in His knowledge and authority as His children. He wills to pour out the riches of truth and blessing upon us, but we have a part to play and a responsibility in our moving forward.

As we forge ahead, stumble, or fight with our own self, we can find the road becomes rocky as our own nature tries to steer things the way we want them, or change the direction of the Holy Spirit to conform our own ideals or expectations. It is only by dying to our own desires, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us, that we will ever truly deepen in our faith and be able to receive all that God intends for us. The Holy Spirit is God the trinity. He is God’s representative on earth.

‘’When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.’’(John 16:13)

We are naturally inclined not to listen; we are a sinful, fallen people. The spirit and wisdom of the world is so ingrained within us, and in world around us, that when we are in the driving seat of our lives, nothing good or Holy can come of it.

‘’This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.’’ (Jeremiah 17:5)

It is when we give ourselves over to the guiding hand of the Holy Spirit that real change takes place. God’s wisdom is above ours, His strength in which we can rest is like none other. We must release our own wisdom, so that God’s wisdom may increase within us. We must become weaker so that His strength within us becomes stronger. If our pride rises up, we need to learn to bend the knee before Him and once again say, Lord lead me on, your ways are my ways.

All this is indeed foolishness to those who don’t believe, but for those who know the nearness of their Saviour, and the perfect rest that comes in surrender to Him, there is so much more to be gained than we can even begin to imagine when we let the Holy Spirit lead us.
