Thought for the Week - 25th October

Pastor Gareth Watkins

Acts 4:32-34

All the believers were one in heart and mind.
No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own,
but they shared everything they had.
With great power the apostles continued to testify
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all
that there were no needy persons among them.
For from time to time those who owned land or houses
sold them, brought the money from the sales

God’s Agreement with Us

In this verse, we see that none of the believers lacked anything, they had sufficient in their lives and God had blessed them in their situations. There was power and there was witness. They were of one heart and one soul, which speaks of the fact they were in covenant with God – otherwise they couldn’t have been of one heart and one soul.

These people had an agreement of one heart and one soul that did something to them internally, that made them at one with God first, and then with each other.

Our focus should be on the knowing of God as our starting point – knowing that we are precious to Him, that He wants us and knows us and we’re special to Him! We can find that oneness with Him and that oneness will spill out into other things.

As we find that depth in God, we are able and enabled by God. The power of God – the power to heal, to perform miracles, only comes from God… and only comes through those who believe who are of one heart and one mind. If the oneness is not there, then the rest doesn’t follow.

We hear many testimonies in this church – cures of alcoholism, removal of fears, lifting of depressions, delivered of phobias. These are miracles that no man can do. It all comes back to that first verse… each person has to be in the right place and the person ministering also has to be in the right place with God. Together in the oneness of God, the power of God comes.

If you find yourself asking whether it’s possible for you, know that Christ came for everyone! For all the lost… not just for a special few!

For those further along your walk, are you at one with God? Or is there something that’s causing you to be at odds with thing? The disciples were long on their walk – followed Jesus for three years. They followed Him, ate with Him, run away, and were restored by Him. They’d prepared themselves and done the groundwork. A lot had gone on in their lives. And it’s the same for us. There are many things that will come into our lives that will take us away from the path that God has for us.

These disciples had to take time to learn this covenant relationship. By the time we read this verse, they’re in a place to be trusted by God. And that’s a question for us, are we in a place to be trusted by God? God Himself trusts people with things. He gives them a work to do and He trusts them with the work to do.

1 John 1:1-4

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,

which we have looked at and our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life,

which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us.

And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

We write this to make our joy complete.

Like John saying he can declare the eternal life that has been brought from the beginning of time to him, we too can declare this miracle of God to others. But we can only declare it as we are one with God. People can point the finger back if you are not as one with God. And if you’re not one with God, take a step back to sort the matter out – to have more of God to sort this matter out. Because this matter will spoil your eternal walk. Christ brought people into oneness with him and that what He does. If you’re not at one with others, if you’re not at one with the church or with God, then you’re out of step with God!

Take it back to God! Ask for help. The disciples found they had help and we find that we also have help – God is with us helping us through these things.

Be encouraged that the oneness of God is a possibility. Be rested in God!

There is more to come for each one of us – more depths of oneness in God. Eternal life starting now! Isn’t God good!
