Thought for the Week - 27th July

2 Peter 1: 2-4

‘’2 May God give you more and more grace and peace
as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.
3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.
We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvellous glory and excellence.
4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature
and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.’’ (NLT)

Here we read Peter speaking of the power and authority of God, and the future He has for us as individuals in giving us everything we need to live a godly life. Do you accept that God will do this for you? Or are you thinking that you are not good enough, you can’t do it or are a failure? God promises to give us everything we need through Jesus Christ. His promises to us are true and are not dependant on how we feel, they do not change with the tides of our emotion.

A promise is a declaration that someone will do something. God’s promises are such declarations; they are the things that God wants to do and will do for you. Would you believe His promises are for you today? Sadly, many Christians do not know the promises of God, nor do they know that they are meant for them individually.

‘’These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.’’ (v4)

These promises enable us to share in the very nature of God, and in them something of eternity comes to us, changing our sinful nature, wrong thoughts and wrong attitudes. The nature of God is imparted to us so that we may live our lives for Christ. He would refine us as sinners, transform and move us on from where we are into the likeness of His son. These truths are contained in His promises to you and I. Our ultimate end is not on this earth but with God Himself, yet for the here and now, He has given us everything we need to live a godly life on this earth through the promises He has made to us.

Amen.
