Thought for the Week - 31st July

Pastor Gareth Watkins
Psalm 63: 1-10

Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.
They encourage themselves in an evil matter;
They talk of laying snares secretly;
They say, “Who will see them?”
They devise iniquities:
“We have perfected a shrewd scheme.”
Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.
But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
All who see them shall flee away.
All men shall fear,
And shall declare the work of God;
For they shall wisely consider His doing.
The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him.
And all the upright in heart shall glory.

Last week I wrote about the keys of Christian living.  This week I’d like to discuss another key to Christian living under the things of God.  We can use those keys given to us by God throughout our Christian journey.

In the verse above, we see the key that God offered David for His successful life in God: “Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation”.  His key was to cry out to God!  That key is ours too – we can cry out to God!  David was exposed to a great many troubles in this passage.  But he followed God, irrespective of those troubles.  He didn’t always do the right things or make the right decisions, but he learnt to cry out to God.

David knew fear.  He cried out for God to hear Him amidst his fear of his enemies.  There were secret plots being made against him by wicked people.  Similar and different fears can come after us.  People around him used their words like weapons against him.  He knew that peoples counsel was not always of God.  But David cried out to God in his meditation.  His prayer was quiet, contemplative and meditative… he talked to God and brought those things to God.

David, like us, had to get through these troubles and continue his walk with God.  God might not always take them away, but we like David, can cry out to God!  Cry out to Him!  Look to Him for the answer.

In Psalm 34: 4-6 we read:

I sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.

Learn to bring a specific trouble to Him – target them!  Don’t get lost in the mess of it all.  Break through and cry out to God.  Cry out to Him for the things that come against you.  The fears, insecurities and troubles of life cannot be hidden… one day it will be just you and God.  If you want to move from failure to success, bring these things to God… cry out to Him and let Him deal with it!  Our ultimate goal is that imperishable crown.

God has given us the answers!  David wasn’t superhuman, he simply learned to cry out to God.  He will deliver us from all of our fears – whether it’s dogs, failure, flying etc.  Fear can rob us of everything we are.  There was no answer in David himself, the answer was in crying out to God.

What is the outcome for the man who uses the key given to him by God?  In Psalm 64 above we read:

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
All who see them shall flee away.
All men shall fear,
And shall declare the work of God

Suddenly, it’s no longer what David can do, but what God can!  We see the outcome is that enemies stumble and we can declare the works of God!  Cry out to God, proclaim the truth of God and follow Him… that’s where the victory comes.  He wants us to succeed and achieve that imperishable crown.  He’s not called you for failure!

When these things come against you, it doesn’t matter – He will give you a key to get through.  Out of all of creation, He hears you!  We can shine with the strength of God!  He’ll save us out of all our troubles!  The battle becomes His.

We can hold these truths of God and call out to Him.

Amen.
